Vongai Tizora, a 2018 graduate of Huntley High School, recently was named one of two recipients of the Engineering Visionary Scholarship from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Bioengineering Program.
Tizora, who was a member of the HHS Medical Academy and a participant in the school’s Youth Residency Program in Partnership with Northwestern Medicine, is now a student in the U of I School of Engineering on a pre-med track.
“Bioengineering is exciting for me because I’ll be able to innovate and change the way in which we develop solutions to the biological problems of the world,” Tizora said.
“Vongai has become an integral member of the community at Illinois in only one semester,” read the university’s announcement.
At U of I, Tizora also is a member of the National Society of Black Engineers, American Medical Student Association, and Biomedical Engineering Society. She is also a part of the Cancer Scholars Program and a volunteer at Carle Hospital.
“My goal is to become a physician with a background in bioengineering. Through accomplishing this goal, I will be able to provide third world countries and low income communities affordable, efficient, and effective health care. Because I am the daughter of two Zimbabwean immigrants, I have witnessed firsthand how great the demand for these services are throughout the world,” Tizora said. “With my donors believing in me and what I have to offer, I will be able to give back to the larger world.”
